INDIANA STATE AFL-CIO

Legislative & Political Action

Anti-worker politicians in Washington and their corporate donors are striking at the rights of workers. Again.

They’re threatening to shut down the National Labor Relations Board, the independent agency that protects workers’ rights, by holding up President Barack Obama’s nominations to the Board.

Statehouse Republicans have removed Democrats from the conference committee on Senate Bill 373 so that they can jam it through without listening to anyone else. You remember this bill, it makes it a crime to take a picture or video of unsafe, discriminatory or unethical conditions at a place of business in Indiana.

They intend to pass it in the next several hours. Call now. Tell them in America we don't believe in hiding the truth.

The ceremony will be held on MONDAY, APRIL 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. on the grounds of the State Capitol in Indianapolis and will feature state and local government, union and community leaders. The service is one of hundreds that will be held around the world in the coming days as working families and union members commemorate sisters and brothers who have died on the job.

"Working people believe in equality and fairness and that’s why we are happy to stand with millions of Americans and with President Obama in supporting marriage equality," said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka in a statement. "LGBT working people face numerous inequities in the workplace and in society as they struggle to care for their families." Read more >>>

Yesterday, the Indiana Senate Committee on Education advanced House Bill 1334 – a blatant political attack designed to weaken the voice of working people. If passed, House Bill 1334 would ban school employers from honoring the request of their employees to deduct union dues utilized for “political activity.” Read more >>>

The Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, and if you listen to the media you’d think if we don’t have a deal on the so-called “fiscal cliff” by then the world really will come to an end.

That’s a lot of pressure. And some are using all that pressure to try and force a bad deal for America on our representatives in Congress. In order to protect the Bush tax cuts for income earned in a single year over $250,000.00, they’re urging cuts to middle class programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. (READ MORE)

They were tradesmen, farmers, shopkeepers – ordinary people – and they marched through the snow without any shoes. Hungry, tired, bruised and bloody, far from home – they fought through the difficulties not just for their own families, but for all families. They were the soldiers in the Continental Army, and in the winter of 1777 when they reached Valley Forge, they had tasted more defeat than victory in battle.

But they endured. They fought. Outnumbered, out-spent, they fought. They trained, they adjusted their tactics, but they always fought.

Brothers and Sisters,

A year and a half ago, Gov. Scott Walker and his friends in the Senate forced through an extremist anti-worker agenda that divided the state.

Last night, Wisconsin took back its Senate. While Gov. Walker remains in office after being only the third governor in American history subjected to the humiliation of a recall, his divisive agenda has been stopped cold.

Please take a moment to check out “Remember November,” a new song written and performed by our union brother Turner Corn.

For those that did not get a chance to hear him at our Statehouse rallies, Turner Corn is a member of the Laborers Union and a lifelong musician. He created this original song to reflect the frustrations working Americans feel towards their elected officials following the recent attacks upon them and encourage everyone to get out and vote in the November election.

Since the song and video footage is all original, please feel free to forward it to your friends, families and co-workers, link it on your Facebook pages, use it at rallies and other events and post it on your union’s websites.

April 12 has been designated as a national day of action to stop Congress from dismantling the United States Postal Service. “Save America’s Postal Service” demonstrations will be held outside every U.S Senate office in the country – including the Indianapolis offices of Senator Richard Lugar and Senator Dan Coats.

Following the Easter recess, Senators will vote on Senate Bill 1789, legislation that would do more harm than good in returning the U.S. Postal Service to fiscal solvency. If passed, Senate Bill 1789 would put an end to six-day mail delivery within two years, phase out door-to-door mail delivery and still fails to address financial issues that resulted from congressional mandates.

SAVE AMERICA’S POSTAL SERVICE DEMONSTRATION
Thursday, April 12, 2012
5:00 p.m.
10 West Market Street, Indianapolis, IN
(Outside the offices of Senators Dick Lugar and Dan Coats on the corner of Market and Illinois)

Unemployment insurance as we know it is on the chopping block.

Tea Party Republicans are leading the charge to reduce coverage and throw up barriers to benefits like GED requirements. And they’re even threatening to force people who are jobless—through no fault of their own—to endure humiliating drug tests just to get survival aid.

Tell Congress: It’s time to pass a clean, yearlong extension of unemployment aid now.

Through the corporate-funded American Legislative Exchange Council, global corporations and state politicians vote behind closed doors to try to rewrite state laws that govern your rights. These so-called "model bills" reach into almost every area of American life and often directly benefit huge corporations. Through ALEC, corporations have "a VOICE and a VOTE" on specific changes to the law that are then proposed in your state. DO YOU?
