INDIANA STATE AFL-CIO

Nancy J. Guyott

President Nancy J. Guyott

Nancy was first elected President on December 8, 2009, becoming the first female president of the Indiana state federation and the youngest president to serve in nearly fifty years.  Prior to that, Nancy had served as the Executive Director and Counsel of the Indiana State AFL-CIO for several years.

Nancy spent most of her career at the Indiana Department of Labor, having begun as an intern there in 1992, while completing law school.  Nancy rose through the ranks at the Indiana Department of Labor serving consecutively as intern, staff counsel, chief counsel, and chief deputy commissioner.  Then Governor Frank O'Bannon appointed Nancy to serve as Commissioner of Labor in 2003, making Nancy the first female and also youngest Commissioner of Labor to serve the State of Indiana.  After Governor O'Bannon was succeeded in office by Governor Joe Kernan, Nancy continued to serve as Commissioner of Labor until the end of his term.

Nancy is a member of the United Steelworkers Local 1999 and of AFSCME Local 3728.  She is a graduate of Harvard College (A.B. cum laude, 1990) and of Indiana University School of Law at Bloomington (cum laude, 1993).
